Now hiring: Bioprocess Scientist

Full-Time — Bioprocess Scientist

Location: Ithaca, NY

Candidates must be able to work on-site

About Us:

CryoBio is a pre-seed startup pioneering new solutions to protect crops from extreme weather and support sustainable food production in the face of widening climate disruption. Founded in early 2025 by two PhD bioengineers with expertise in bringing technology from lab to market, we've made extraordinary progress over the past year, built significant buy-in with our local growers, and are looking to expand our research team. We're proud to be backed by a leading climate deeptech VC, along with advisors and other investors.

CryoBio is seeking a Bioprocess Scientist to support research and development activities focused on optimizing and scaling its microbial fermentation platform. This role is ideal for a scientifically driven individual who enjoys hands-on experimental work and wants to contribute directly to improving process performance and advancing CryoBio’s technology towards commercial readiness.

The Bioprocess Scientist will work primarily in CryoBio’s laboratory environment, executing bench-scale experiments and supporting process development initiatives that improve fermentation, downstream processing, and scalability. Working closely with the rest of the CryoBio team, this role plays a key part in generating reliable data, improving process performance and consistency, and translating experimental results into actionable process insights. This position is well suited to a detail-oriented, solution-focused team player who thrives in a collaborative R&D setting.

Responsibilities:

  • Process Development & Optimization:  Support the development and implementation of microbial fermentation and downstream steps to produce key biomolecules. Optimize yield, scalability and cost-effectiveness through experiments and data-driven analysis.

  • Experimental Execution: Must be able to design and execute bench-scale fermentation and downstream experiments, including setup, monitoring, sampling, troubleshooting, and data collection.

  • Scale-Up & Pilot Support: Work with external teams to optimize processes from bench scale toward pilot-scale and commercial operation.

  • Laboratory Operations:  Support day-to-day laboratory operations, including media preparation and equipment upkeep, while maintaining high standards of safety, documentation, and compliance.

  • Assist with Plant Studies: Support and participate in testing key biomolecules on target crops under greenhouse and field conditions.

  • Collaboration & Team Contribution: Work collaboratively with the rest of the CryoBio team to support shared research goals and contribute to a positive, high-performing R&D culture.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Biology, Chemistry, Microbiology, Biotechnology, Chemical Engineering, or a related field.

  • Minimum of two years hands-on experience working with bench and/or pilot-scale bioprocess systems. This should include practical experience in microbial fermentation, downstream processing, aseptic technique, and laboratory operations.

  • Demonstrated experience designing and executing fermentation and downstream  experiments.

  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to manage multiple tasks effectively without supervision.

  • Ability to work on site in Ithaca, NY full time

  • Eligible to work in the US with no restrictions

  • Note: This role primarily supports 2L and 10L bioreactor operations and may occasionally involve work with larger systems (up to 40 L). Handling of associated components and materials may require solo lifting of items weighing up to approximately 40 lbs. Reasonable accommodations will be considered.

Preferred Experience:

  • A candidate with a PhD in a relevant area would be preferred.

  • Experience working with a variety of microbial hosts for recombinant protein production.

  • Familiarity with partial factorial DOE methodology.

  • Familiarity with basic molecular biology techniques (PCR, molecular cloning, DNA sequencing, etc.) and biochemical methods (SDS-PAGE, Western blotting)

  • A candidate with an agricultural background or experience working with plants in under greenhouse or field conditions would be a plus.

Job Benefits:

  • Our benefits package includes attractive stock options and a competitive salary that reflects our company's early stage.

  • Other benefits include flexible schedules, holidays, and paid time off.
